Nepal Schools Project

lllassoc

3Ls members enjoyed a fascinating presentation given by three eminent representatives from Strathclyde University Engineering for Development: Lady Eileen McDonald, Honorary President of the 3Ls; Christine Donald, International Recruitment Officer for the Faculty of Engineering; Dr Huyam Abudib, Research Associate at the Department of Architecture.

In 2015, an earthquake in Nepal damaged 8,000 schools. This prompted the beginning of an ambitious project, utilising the skills and expertise of staff and students at Strathclyde. Two new schools have already been built and a third is being undertaken in a very remote area.  This challenging project aims to ensure not only that the new schools are eco-friendly, but also that the buildings are floodproof and earthquake resistant.

The project might be described as good use of engineering, but it is more than that, it is an ingenious educational and humanitarian initiative which can change the lives of pupils and communities in Nepal.
