French

The French Club, the longest running of all the 3Ls clubs, provides a relaxed and friendly atmosphere for members to listen to presentations on a variety of topics, current, cultural and linguistic.

Talks are delivered in French by club members, invited speakers and often students from Strathclyde University or a local secondary school and are accessible to all levels of speaker. After each presentation there is the opportunity for members and speakers to socialise over a glass of wine.

We meet on the third Friday of the month from October to April in the Graham Hills building. We also have occasional meetings outside of the programme to have a lunch or see a French film. Check out the copy of our newsletter below, which looks back at our 2022/23 programme.

Your £10 membership fee for the club also gives you access to the facilities of the Alliance Française and its resources.

Un accueil chaleureux et une ambiance détendue vous attendent.

Venez nombreux !

Gilbert du Motier

Marquis de Lafayette, Général et Auvergnat

We welcomed Cécile Docherty to our first meeting of the 2023/24 programme and were hugely entertained by her excellent talk on the life of

Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, more commonly known in the United States as simply Lafayette. He was a French aristocrat, military officer and politician and a major figure in both the American and French revolutions, helping to shape the destiny of both countries.
